Dambana School Project: Transforming Education and Preserving Heritage
The Dambana School Project has delivered progressive changes to the Dambana school and its surrounding community while supporting the preservation of cultural heritage. Through a series of impactful initiatives, the project has addressed important educational and community needs, ensuring long-term benefits for students, teachers, and villagers.
One of the major achievements is the provision of a reliable water supply to the school. For 35 years, the school operated without running water, a challenge that greatly impacted students’ daily lives. The new water system benefits both the school and the community, with a dedicated outlet for local villagers to collect water. This vital resource fosters health, hygiene, and a stronger bond between the school and its community.
To further enhance infrastructure, three toilet blocks were renovated to meet modern standards. The upgraded facilities include lockable toilets for female students, promoting safety, dignity, and inclusivity. These changes create a more welcoming environment for girls and encourage consistent school attendance.
In the classroom, outdated chalkboards were replaced with whiteboards, significantly improving the learning environment. A portable whiteboard was also provided, allowing for outdoor lessons when the classroom gets too hot. These improvements empower teachers and engage students in a more interactive educational experience.
The school’s resources were expanded with the addition of a laser printer, ensuring efficient production of educational materials. Ongoing support for toner and paper ensures the sustainability of this resource. Additionally, the school’s library was upgraded with books and educational materials, providing students with tools to broaden their knowledge and skills.
The project has also supported extracurricular activities, providing uniforms for the school’s volleyball team. This initiative promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and school pride. Additionally, an annual sports carnival was introduced, offering students a platform to showcase their talents and build camaraderie.
A highlight of the project is the Adivassi Language Project, (a Sanskrit word that means ‘Original People’) this project seeks to preserve the endangered language of the Vedda people, an ancient indigenous community. The Vedda language, which has been spoken for generations but never formally recorded, is at risk of being lost. This initiative aims to document words and phrases of the language, translating them into Sinhala and English to create a comprehensive dictionary.
The dictionary will be produced in both hard copy and an online app, ensuring accessibility and long-term preservation. This project not only safeguards the linguistic heritage of the Vedda people but also celebrates their unique identity. By preserving their language, the Adavassi Language Project strengthens cultural pride and ensures that future generations can connect with their ancestral roots.
